Were you hurt by the Catholic Church?

It may not matter how long ago it was.

All that matters is you were hurt — and now you can do something.

The Archdiocese of New York has established an independent program that allows victims of sexual abuse by members of the clergy to apply for financial compensation from the church — even for abuse claims that are decades old.

This is a very big deal, even more so considering the Manhattan-based New York archdiocese is the nation’s second-largest archdiocese after Los Angeles. The New York archdiocese oversees 296 parishes and 2.6 million church members, meaning the ripple effects from this measure of justice could affect other archdioceses across the country as they come forward to take responsibility for their long history of sexually abusing minors. Before now, the Church tended to get away with the abuse. Not anymore — we can’t let this abuse continue anymore.

You may be able to apply for compensation from the New York Catholic Church if you are the victim of childhood sexual abuse by the Catholic Church or are a close relative such as a parent or spouse of a deceased victim of childhood sexual abuse by the Catholic Church. In order to participate in this settlement, the abuse must have been by a priest or deacon of the Archdiocese of New York, which covers the following counties:

  • Manhattan
  • Staten Island
  • The Bronx
  • Dutchess
  • Orange
  • Rockland
  • Sullivan
  • Ulster
  • Putnam
  • Or Westchester counties

Simmons Hanly Conroy is ready to provide you with legal advice and to answer the questions that depend upon your individual circumstances.

Why Apply for Compensation?

The compensation program allows individuals hurt by the Catholic Church to seek both justice and closure in a manner that feels safer and more private. In addition, many individual’s cases may be too old for court — but not for the compensation program.

By participating in the compensation program, you are able to demand justice, seek compensation from the Church — and maintain the level of privacy you choose. That’s because individuals can decide whether they wish to keep both their allegations and/or financial settlements private — or go public with their cases.

Please understand there is no cap on compensation. In fact, the archdiocese has agreed to pay whatever amount ordered by the compensation program. This money will NOT come out of funds contributed from church members to support parishes and charitable works. Instead, all money used to cover costs incurred by the compensation program will be paid through a long-term loan the archdiocese acquired solely to cover compensation payments.

The settlement may range from hundreds of thousands to even millions of dollars. In addition, the archdiocese is unable to appeal the compensation program’s decisions.

No matter when you were sexually abused by the Catholic Church, your voice matters.

We cannot hold the Church accountable until all of your stories are heard, until we all rise up. Thankfully, with this compensation program, you not only have the opportunity to be financially rewarded for your bravery in coming forward, you also have the ability to maintain the level of privacy you wish as you demand accountability from the New York archdiocese.

Pope Frances designated 2016 the Year of Mercy. We believe this compensation program offers you and your family a way to find your mercy.
Healing cannot happen until justice is brought — and accountability held — to those who wronged you. This program has been a long time coming. Now that it’s here, we encourage you to take action.

It may feel as if, truly, it’s too late for you or your loved one. That’s no longer true. Your time has come, and we’re ready to help you get the reconciliation you’ve always needed.

Unfortunately, there is a time limit. Contact us for a free and completely private consult to learn your options.
